The Los Angeles
Hare Krishna temple was first established in 1970 by
His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupada, the founder acarya of
the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Srila
Prabhupada personally performed the opening ceremony for the temple
at this location. Srila Prabhupada spent much of his time here
during the late 60's and early 70's, translating books and lecturing
on the Vedic philosophy of Bhagavad-gita, and Srimad-Bhagavatam. He
considered the Los Angeles temple to be the western world
headquarters for his ISKCON society.
The temple has 8
buildings for accommodating devotees and two large buildings which
house the temple, buffet and gift store. It is one of ISKCON's
largest temples, and features an excellent standard of deity
worship. We also have a large multi-media exhibit depicting scenes
from the Bhagavad-gita. Los Angeles temple is home to the North
American division of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, the publishing
wing of ISKCON. From this office all of Srila Prabhupada's books are
published and distributed to temples throughout North America.
